Project presentation: “Living Elbe – protection and research on our doorstep”

The Süderelbe is a section of the Lower Elbe in Hamburg and plays a central role in the ecological balance in the region. It serves as an important habitat for numerous fish and plant species, influences the city climate and at the same time offers recreation room for people. However, rising temperatures, invasive types, plastic pollution and human interventions are increasingly increasing to this sensitive ecosystem.

With our research and environmental project “Living Elbe” we would like to analyze the current state of the water, document changes and develop targeted protective measures. Through regular examinations, we collect important data on biodiversity, water quality and ecological stress – because only what we understand can also be effectively protected.

Our focus

🔬 Measure & check

  • We regularly record water samples and measure parameters such as temperature development, oxygen content and pollution.
  • With long -term measurements we gain insight into the effects of climate change on the Elbe.

🐟 examine fish and biodiversity

  • With scientific methods, we document the inventory of local fish species and the spread of invasive species that threaten the natural biodiversity.
  • Our investigations help to develop recommendations for the preservation and protection of endangered species.

🧪 Test plastic waste & microplastics

  • We analyze the strain on the Elbe through plastic waste and microplastics that not only pollute the water, but also get into the food chain.
  • Our research helps to develop recommendations for action for politics and society in order to reduce plastic pollution in the long term.

🌍 create education & consciousness

  • The knowledge gained is flowing into environmental education programs for schools and workshops for the public.
  • Through joint clean-ups, information events and interactive actions, we would like to sensitize people to protect the Elbe.

Why this project is important

The Elbe is a lively ecosystem that is subject to strong changes due to climate change and human influences. In order to preserve their biodiversity and to inspire future generations for the protection of the waters, we now have to act.
