The Norder Elbe river is a section of the lower Elbe in Hamburg, and plays a Central role for the ecological balance in the Region. It serves as an important habitat for numerous fish and plant species, affects the climate of the city and offering a recreational space for the people. However, rising temperatures, invasive species, pollution with Plastic and human intervention to set this sensitive Ecosystem is increasingly becoming.
With our research and environmental project ‘Living Elbe’ we want to the current state of the water body to analyze changes in the document, and targeted protection measures to develop. Through regular research, we gather key data on the species diversity, water quality and environmental burdens – because it is only what we understand, we can protect effectively.
Our Focus
Fairs & Test
- We regularly collect water samples and measure parameters such as temperature, oxygen content, and pollution.
- Long-term measurements, we gain insights into the impact of climate change on the river Elbe.
Fish & biodiversity investigate
- With scientific methods, we document the inventory of native fish species , as well as the spread of invasive species, the natural biodiversity threaten.
- Our studies help to develop recommendations for the preservation and protection of endangered species.
離 plastic waste & micro plastic test
- We analyze the load on the Elbe river by plastic waste and Microplastics, which not only pollute the water, but also in the food chain.
- Our research contributes to recommendations for policy and society, to develop, to the plastic pollution in the long term to reduce.
Education & awareness
- The findings are incorporated in environmental education programs for schools and Workshops for the Public one.
- By common Clean-ups, info, events and interactive actions, we want to raise awareness for the protection of the Elbe.
Why this project is important
The Elbe is a living Ecosystem, the climate change and human impacts, strong changes of a subject. Their species diversity, preserve, and future generations for the protection of the waters of delight, we need to act now.
With ‘Living Elbe’ we are committed to a science-based, sustainable, and community-based solution to protect this valuable Ecosystem in the long term. Because only a healthy Elbe can continue to be a home for people and nature.
